Artist’s Statement – The Journals

Why do I write and paint my journal entries?

Using paint to flesh out the words, I am able to describe something that profoundly moved me, some small, seemingly insignificant moment or person that shook my sense of order and changed the way I look at life. Thinking of each painting as a page taken from the story of my life, I often discover small things I missed before in simply writing about it at the time.

As I leaf through the words I wrote, a particular incident I recorded inspires me to recreate that emotion I experienced at the time, using paint to retell the story.

Stitched together, the visual imagery and written words give life to each other.
