Before the Storm by Jeannie Hope Gibson

Before the Storm

June 20, 2017 By Jen Liszka

Before the fire in my brain changed my life, I had begun my series “Emergence” with this piece shortly after my parents passed away.

This is not a self-portrait, nor are any of the others in the series. Rather, they describe my inner state of being in that moment.

In this piece I have recognized the existence of a side of me that is strong, almost fierce, unafraid. I am emerging from a dark forest into a place of light.

In my imagination this series was to reflect my journey as an adult child, grieving the loss of my parents, while facing the world with strength and calm.

Little did I know how my journey would actually go.
