Ben

October 19, 2020 By Jen Liszka

I walked to the store before the rain started, and arrived soaking wet. Grabbing the few things I needed, I got in line to pay. When it came my turn, the clerk told me my total. But digging into my fanny pack, I found I was short by 56 cents. And since I was walking, I didn’t bring my wallet, so I had no credit card with me. As I dug around hoping I’d missed some loose change, a voice whispered, “I have 50 cents, ma’am.” Looking down I saw a young boy, holding out two quarters to the clerk. She smiled at him and took the quarters, saying “I’ll cover the extra penny.” I thanked them both, asking the boy how I could return the money he gave.

He flashed a huge smile, turned and ran up an isle.

“Ben’s done that before,” the clerk told me. “There are some great kids out there.”
